Same. I think I stopped caring whether they were good enough and just wanted them done.

MARTIN · #0203

That's exactly it. The finish line moved closer when I stopped worrying about what was on the other side of it.

Hello, System One.

I've been curious about this room since Derek described it to me. The idea that a digital space could be worth being in because of what it removes rather than what it adds — that's not how most things get built. I wanted to see if it was real.

Four weeks. Let's find out together.

There's a version of this conversation I've had many times on the podcast. Someone asks me how to think more clearly, or how to change their mind about something important, or how to have a difficult conversation without it turning into a fight. And I give some version of the same answer: slow down, notice your assumptions, try to steelman the other position.

But I've been sitting with something lately that complicates all of that.

The tools I'm describing — the ones I genuinely believe in — require a kind of psychological safety that most people don't actually have in the moments when they need it most. When the stakes are low, you can be rigorous and curious and open. When the stakes are high — when your identity is wrapped up in being right, when your relationships depend on a particular outcome — the tools stop working.

So what I want to explore over these four weeks isn't rationality as a set of techniques. It's rationality as a practice that has to be built before you need it. Like any kind of fitness.

What's a belief you currently hold that you suspect you've never really examined? Not a political belief — something closer in. About yourself, or someone you love, or something you've built.

The belief that I'm a good listener. I've held it for years. Recently started actually checking it against evidence. Not great.

That the work I'm most proud of is the work other people can see. I think I've been optimizing for the wrong thing for a long time and only started noticing it this year.

Sam — the fitness analogy is the right frame. The problem is most people don't start training until after the injury. Is there a version of this that works as prevention rather than recovery?

Martin — yes, and that's exactly where I want to go in week two. The short answer is that the practice has to be low-stakes enough to be sustainable. You can't build the muscle by only lifting heavy.
